The RELIOTRON Cathodoluminescence System

... a microscope-mounted cathodoluminescence (CL) system designed for the primary purpose of looking at thin sections of materials (but also slabs, loose grains, grain mounts, etcetera . . .).

  • Stainless Steel vacuum chamber, with ~50mm-diameter leaded top window.
  • Dual Stage Rotary Vane vacuum pump with foreline trap and exhaust oil mist eliminator.
  • Vacuum seals are Viton O-rings, Teflon chevron packings, and nylon Swagelok ferrules.
  • Easily serviceable Cold-Cathode Discharge Electron Source normally operated between 5 and 15 kV, with regulated beam currents from 0 to 1 mA.
  • Removable drawer with XY motion mechanism for sample changes, service, or repair.
  • 50 mm x 75 mm Sample Tray accommodates up to three standard thin sections, a macro-section, or slabs of up to ~10 mm thick.
  • Conductive coating of samples is not necessary and should be avoided for best CL emissions.
  • Electron beam can be left unfocused (5 to 10 mm spot), focused (1 mm spot), or de-focused for areas up to ~50 mm in diameter for "macro" observations or macro-photography.
  • Adjustable beam deflection magnets allow control over position of the electron beam spot
  • Recommended working distance for microscope objectives: minimum ~10 mm, but 15 mm or greater is recommended; ~7 mm is possible with use of the Optional Re-entrant Window, intended for use with higher-magnification objectives.

Additional Options Available

  • Tall Chamber alternative to the Standard Chamber accommodates samples up to almost 30 mm thick.
  • Ludl Electronic Products MAC6000 Automation of X and Y axes, and add a Focus module as well for your microscope!
  • Storage Stand with mounting plate, for holding the chamber when taken off the microscope, in case you want to use the microscope for something else, or would like to do "macro" photography (taking advantage of a de-focussed beam).
  • Loose Grain Holder for CL imaging of mineral grain separates, sand grains, etc...
  • Cryogenic Chilled Sample Holder for CL imaging of cooled samples.
  • Custom Mounting Adapters to work with your microscope, if necessary.
  • RELIOTRON systems occaisionally have been fitted with Optical and/or Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectrometers; these are currently special order options.
  • Purchase Installation and Training Service at the time of your new instrument acquisition, where personnel from Relion Scientific will travel to your lab to help you set up and learn about your new CL instrument (the alternative is for the user to set up their new instrument themselves, with remote guidance and support from Relion Scientific by e-mail or other communication mode).
  • Purchase a Service Contract at the time of your new instrument acquisition (particularly of interest to customers outside the USA (such as in Canada), as it may avoid requirements for your organization to obtain a temporary work permit to allow Relion Scientific personnel to enter your country for a service visit for an instrument that is otherwise out of warranty).
