Who We Are

Relion Scientific LLC is owned and managed by Dr. Timothy Allen. He has a B.A. in Geological Sciences from Harvard College, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Geology from Dartmouth College. Tim was on the faculty in Geology and Environmental Studies at Keene State College for almost three decades.

After taking an early retirement from Keene State in 2021, Tim began working with Dr. Donald J. Marshall, author of the book, "Cathodoluminescence of Geological Materials" and owner of RELION Industries, LLC, manufacturer of the RELIOTRON CL system. In this work, Tim has traveled all over the USA and Canada, as well as to Saudi Arabia, to install and service RELIOTRON and LUMINOSCOPE CL systems.

After some 60+ years of working with CL and related technologies, Don decided in 2025 to retire from the business of manufacturing CL systems. Tim formed Relion Scientific LLC to acquire the assets of Don's company and continue on in the business of developing, manufacturing, selling, and servicing of cathodoluminescence petrography systems and accessories.

Unfortunately, Don passed away in May 2026 at the age of 93. Tim sorely misses Don's insights and experience!

Beyond his work with Don and cathodoluminescence instruments, Tim has experience with geologic mapping, petrologic, and geochemical studies in crystalline terranes in New Hampshire and in northern Pakistan, as well as with mineral exploration, geophysical, hydrogeologic, and environmental geologic studies. He has used petrographic microscopes, an electron microprobe, and assorted rock sample processing and mineral separation equipment. He has designed and built vacuum extraction lines for stable isotope analysis of silicates and of water, and managed and maintained an isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS), and a wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WD-XRF) spectrometer and associated supporting equipment.

We rely on several subcontractors and other vendors for key elements of our manufacturing, but we do currently have some capabilities in-house for machining of metals, plastics, and wood (manual milling, turning, sawing, drilling, etc...), as well as mechanical and electronic assembly, and vacuum system testing.

MonSun GeoSci is a registered trade name of Relion Scientific LLC.
